Dr. Fred Snyder

Currently in the Office of Knowledge Management with responsibility for University Partnerships including technical aspects of interns, co-ops, and attracting university grants and educational programs to the Tech Center. I’ve been with the FAA for fifteen years beginning in the Aviation Security Division as a research scientist researching explosives detection devices. Professionally, I’m a physical chemist with a Ph.D. degree from the University of Massachusetts - Amherst (1977).

During with my career with the FAA I’ve served as manager for the Aviation Research Grants program, the Technology Transfer Program, and the Small Business Innovation Research Programs. I am also an adjunct faculty member of the Richard Stockton College and teach a number of chemistry courses.

Prior to joining the Government in 1990, I was employed by Philips Electronics in Briarcliff Manor New York from 1985 and served in their headquarters office in the Netherlands from 1988 - 1990 coordinating international research and development in laboratories in France, England, Germany, Belgium, and the United States for two major product lines, medical systems and industrial testing.

Prior to Joining Phillips, I was employed by ITT Rayonier and ITT International and worked on cellulose products obtaining a patent on a microfibrillated cellulose. I established a commercial laboratory in the chemistry department at Rutgers, New Brunswick and employed students as well as faculty consultants to develop a new material for electrophoretic display systems for ITT.

Technical interests include how to commercialize technology as a commodity, modeling and simulations and developing research programs on the open source model

The focus of the Center for Structures in Extreme Environments is the study of structures that are exemplary of the human spirit for exploration and advancement - whether it be the exploration of space, the settlement of the Moon and Mars, or pushing the frontiers of understanding and development of the ocean - we are glad to be a part of a very exciting aspect of the human adventure.
